A trade that occurred back on March 6 involving the Ducks and Devils for Brian Dumoulin finally had the conditions met, which will include a Jets draft pick.
The injury-plagued New Jersey Devils acted quickly to address a key need just over 24 hours prior to the NHL trade deadline back in March.
On March 6th, they acquired veteran defenseman Brian Dumoulin from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for a second-round draft pick and rights to an unsigned 19-year-old prospect Herman Traff.
‘Brian was good for us both on and off the ice, and we wish him well in New Jersey,’ Ducks general manager Pat Verbeek said. ‘This wasn’t an easy decision for us. We do feel this allows more opportunity for our young defensemen, who have proven they can play and succeed at the NHL level.’
Anaheim agreed to absorb 50% of Dumoulin’s salary through the rest of the season. The Ducks were also going to receive the higher of the second-round draft picks between Edmonton’s and Winnipeg’s, during this year’s draft.
Winnipeg Jets Lose Draft Pick To The Anaheim Ducks
Because Winnipeg finished higher in the standings than Edmonton after this season, they would have normally picked after the Oilers.
However, the Devils already own the rights to the Oilers’ pick, so the Ducks will be getting the Jets’ pick, per PuckPedia.
Dumoulin, 33, has plenty of experience under his belt, with 702 total regular-season games listed on his resume.
Twice a Stanley Cup champion with Pittsburgh (2016, 2017), he has posted 16 points with close to 20 minutes per game ice time through 61 games this season with the Ducks and has added five assists in 15 games with the Devils.
The Devils made the trade after losing No. 1 point scorer Jack Hughes for the remainder of the season when he underwent shoulder surgery.
Ultimately the loss of No. 1 defenseman Dougie Hamilton and Jack Hughes outweighed the addition of Dumolin as the Devils were ousted in Round 1 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
