SAINTS FOR LIFE: Saints safety Tyrann Mathieu completely shuts down recent report regarding his future in New Orleans
The New Orleans Saints have plenty of veterans who could see the end of their tenure with the team end this offseason. That being said, it sounds like they are committed to a reload rather than a rebuild when it comes to their roster.
Kellen Moore will have plenty of work to do alongside the front office, and the future of Tyrann Mathieu is an important piece to the puzzle. Mathieu made a strong statement on social media this past weekend.
Tyrann Mathieu shuts down report
Mathieu’s post is in response to a recent report that clouded his potential future with New Orleans.
According to SportsKeeda’s Tony Pauline’s combine day 6 recap, the Saints are considering releasing safety Tyrann Mathieu. Clearly, the veteran defensive back does not agree with that sentiment.
This notion from the former Pro Bowl safety doubles down on his hopes relayed earlier in the offseason. Mathieu said that that he wanted to play at least two more years in New Orleans, hoping to win another Super Bowl for the city.
It would be a surprising move for the Saints to move on from Mathieu this offseason, in my opinion. He dealt with some notable injuries last season, but they would not gain too much from a salary cap-clearing perspective to become compliant.
Rather, if the Saints designate Mathieu as a post-June 1st cut, as they may for multiple players to garner more overall cap space, they would save more than $6.2 million as of now.
Restructuring Mathieu’s deal is also an option but could make it tougher to move on from him down the road.
Not to mention, they would be releasing or trading away a fan favorite in a time where many of those players have their careers potentially dwindling, as they get older. Let’s see how it all shakes out for Mathieu and the Saints.
