The Los Angeles Rams are releasing cornerback Tre’Vius Hodges-Tomlinson just two years after drafting him, per a report from ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter. According to Tomlinson’s agent Kevin Conner, it was a mutual decision to part ways.
It seems odd that a player like Tomlinson, who was a sixth-round pick, is in a position to request a release after producing next to nothing during such a short amount of time. In this writer’s humble opinion, the Rams are simply moving on from a player who they don’t believe fit their plans moving forward.
Tomlinson appeared sparingly in 15 games as a rookie in 2023, recording 13 total tackles. He then missed the entire 2024 season as he was placed on injured reserve with an undisclosed injury. Tomlinson hopes to compete for a starting role with a new team in 2025.
The nephew of Hall of Fame running back LaDainian Tomlinson, Tre’Vius had a decorated collegiate career at TCU. In four years with the Horned Frogs he was named First-Team All-Big 12 three times, and was a First-Team All-American in 2022. He also won the Jim Thorpe Award that year, which goes to the top defensive back in college football.
Tomlinson was dominant during his time at TCU, recording 126 total tackles, five interceptions (one returned for a touchdown), 36 passes defensed, and three forced fumbles. Although it hasn’t translated to the NFL yet, he’s still very young at 25-years-old and can still carve a career out for himself.
As for the Rams, they could use some quality depth at CB. They could address the position during free agency, which begins next week, or in the draft, which they currently have eight picks in. L.A. could acquire even more picks if it can soon find a trade partner for wide receiver Cooper Kupp.
