Raiders Re-Sign Key Defensive Starter Ahead of Free Agency on Sunday

Posted on March 10, 2025 by ADMIN

The Las Vegas Raiders began the offseason in a tumultuous state by firing head coach Antonio Pierce and general manager Tom Telesco. They have found a sense of stability with their replacements, Pete Carroll and John Spytek, however, just ahead of the free agency period.

After extending star edge rusher Maxx Crosby and signing interior offensive lineman Alex Cappa, the team once again made a pivotal roster decision on Sunday night just hours before the legal tampering period began. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that the team was re-signing veteran defensive tackle Adam Butler to a three-year, $16.5 million deal with $11 million guaranteed.

Butler has been a key figure on the Raiders’ defensive line since he joined the team in 2023. In two seasons, he has totaled 10.0 sacks and 93 total tackles, including 16 for a loss, as well as six passes defended. He had a career year in 2024 for Las Vegas and will have the opportunity to build on that under a new regime.

While Butler will be 31 for the entirety of next season, he has battled Father Time quite well under defensive coordinator Patrick Graham and defensive line coach Rob Leonard, both of whom were retained by Carroll this offseason. Butler may have commanded a hefty contract if he hit the open market, so first-year general manager John Spytek was wise to lock the veteran player down for several seasons on a manageable deal.
