Kansas City’s Next Big Move: Chiefs GM Confident About Signing $78 Million Star

Will the Kansas City Chiefs bring back one of their top offensive players this offseason?

 

 

Chiefs 25-year-old guard Trey Smith had a breakout year in 2024. He was named a Pro Bowler for the first time and now is heading to free agency as one of the top overall players heading to the open market.

Smith has been speculated as a fit for a handful of teams already this offseason, including the Chicago Bears and New England Patriots, but it sounds like Kansas City doesn’t want to let him go. Chiefs general manager Brett Veach spoke to the media on Tuesday ahead of the upcoming National Football League Scouting Combine. He shared that the team is “pretty optimistic” that they will be able to re-sign Smith, as shared by NFL.com’s Brett Veach.

“Chiefs GM Brett Veach says he’s ‘pretty optimistic’ KC can keep Trey Smith, added ‘We’ve already had some good dialogue with him’ and his agency, CAA,” Veach shared.

Smith is projected to land a four-year deal worth over $78 million this offseason. It would be great if the Chiefs could find a way to give him a deal of that nature. He was one of the most important pieces of the Chiefs’ offense in 2024. He will be expensive this offseason, but that doesn’t mean Kansas City should let him walk and it sounds like the team knows this.

Hopefully, the two sides can work out a deal this offseason once free agency opens up.
