Breaking: Patriots Looking to Lock Up Veteran with Contract Extension

Posted on March 3, 2025 by ADMIN

The New England Patriots have plenty of money to spend in the offseason, as they have the most cap space in the NFL.

They could use that cap space to sign players to contract extensions.

One player up for a new deal is a veteran defensive back who has played his entire career in New England.

Jonathan Jones’ contract is up, and he is a free agent.

The Patriots can bring him back, or let him walk in free agency. But before deciding, the Patriots and Jones are expected to meet.

Jones is open to a change but wishes to retire as a Patriot.

The 31-year-old cornerback is on the market, and the Patriots have time to hash out a new contract to bring the nine-year veteran back for another run.

An unfortunate reality of the situation is that Jones’ play has dipped in 2024.

After a strong 2023 season, where he only allowed one touchdown all year, he surrendered seven in 2024.

It was another season where he didn’t record an interception, the second consecutive season.

Since his transition to outside cornerback in 2022, he had been a solid option for the Patriots. His 2024 season saw his stats take a sharp turn. He allowed a 146 passer rating when targeted in 2024, the first time it’s been over 100 since 2019.

A decline in play isn’t uncommon for older players, and as Jones comes off his age 31 season, he could be a player the Patriots move off of in free agency.

Jones could be a veteran presence for a rookie cornerback, and could provide solid depth in case of an emergency. But, after a rough 2024, the Patriots re-signing Jones isn’t a guarantee.

But, before that decision is finalized, the two sides will meet to discuss the future.
