Breaking: Cowboys Release Lineman, Freeing Up $14 Million in Cap Space

The Dallas Cowboys need to work on their salary cap before next season. They could make some tough cuts to help give themselves financial flexibility.

The Cowboys are $2.8 million over the 2025 salary cap, according to Spotrac. The team could look to restructure contracts for Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb, but making some cuts will likely be necessary. FanSided’s Jerry Trotta urged the team to cut ties with Terence Steele and save $14 million.

“It might be risky for a team to cut its most experienced offensive linemen, but Steele has not performed like one of the league’s top right tackles,” wrote Trotta. “Steele’s $16 million annual average value ranks 12th among RTs. Has he really lived up to that since signing his extension two years ago? Probably not. There’s something to be said that Steele has started all 34 regular-season games the last two seasons after tearing his ACL in 2022. However, in 2023 he gave up the second-most pressures and quarterback hits among tackles, per Pro Football Focus. Last season, almost two years removed from the ACL, he allowed the fourth-most sacks and eighth-most pressures.”

Steele has 74 career starts since signing with the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 2020. He signed a five-year, $82 million deal in 2023. He has an $18 million cal hit next season, and a poster June 1 release would save the Cowboys $14 million in 2025.
