Breaking: Chiefs’ Projected Superstar Linked to Giants in Stunning $105 Million Deal

As the Kansas City Chiefs look to recover from their Super Bowl loss, their top free agency pursuit will be hotly contested.

Superstar right guard Trey Smith just finished up a Pro Bowl campaign for the Chiefs, and after four stellar seasons in the league, he’s fixing to get a huge payday in free agency. Kansas City would love to keep him, but perhaps a half-dozen others would love to steal him away.

ESPN’s Dan Graziano projected earlier this offseason that Smith would get a five-year, $105 million contract, which would set a new record for guards. The two most common teams that have been tied to Smith for most of the offseason, the New England Patriots and Chicago Bears, have more than enough projected cap space to make that work.

Could one other disappointing team from the 2024 season work their way into the Smith sweepstakes?

On Monday, USA Today’s Dan Benton named the New York Giants as a threat to sign the 25-year-old, calling Smith the top free agent target for the NFC East’s last-place finishers.

“The Giants are obviously on the hunt for their next quarterback but what good is that if they can’t protect him? Benton wrote. “Although their offensive line took a small step forward in 2024, issues along the interior created problems down the stretch and served as a reminder that the decade-long OL rebuild is far from complete.”

“Trey Smith may not be a flashy signing but he’s precisely what New York’s offense needs: A consistent, above-average interior lineman who can both run block and pass protect.”

The Giants lag slightly behind the Patriots and Giants in cap space with a projected $48.3 million budget, per Over The Cap. However, that still blows the Chiefs’ $7.9 million projection out of the water.

One thing is for certain: the more teams that get involved, the more the Chiefs will have to break the bank if they want to keep Smith in town. Even if they can afford the $105 million Graziano projects, they might not be able to go any higher.
