Blockbuster: Chicago Bears Has Agree On A Year Deal With Miami Dolphins TE Durham Smythe Worth…

Posted on March 6, 2025 by ADMIN

The Chicago Bears have bolstered their tight end corps by signing veteran Durham Smythe to a one-year contract. This move reunites Smythe with Bears head coach Ben Johnson, who previously served as Smythe’s wide receivers coach during their tenure with the Miami Dolphins.

Smythe, 29, entered the NFL as a fourth-round pick by the Dolphins in 2018 after a collegiate career at Notre Dame. Over seven seasons in Miami, he developed a reputation as a reliable blocking tight end, contributing both on offense and special teams. His most productive receiving season came in 2021, when he recorded 34 receptions for 357 yards.

In 2024, Smythe’s role in the passing game diminished, as he logged nine receptions for 53 yards without reaching the end zone. Following the season, the Dolphins released him on February 14, 2025, as part of roster adjustments to manage salary cap constraints.

The Bears’ decision to sign Smythe addresses the need for depth at the tight end position, especially after the release of Gerald Everett to free up cap space. Smythe’s proficiency as a blocker complements the skill set of starting tight end Cole Kmet, providing versatility to the Bears’ offensive schemes.

This signing also reflects Coach Johnson’s strategy of integrating players familiar with his coaching style and system. Smythe’s experience under Johnson’s guidance in Miami suggests a seamless transition into the Bears’ offense.

As the Bears continue to refine their roster ahead of the upcoming season, the addition of Smythe signifies a commitment to enhancing both the offensive line and tight end depth, aiming to improve overall team performance.
