The UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Committee decided on June 5, 2018 to fine and sanction Athletic and Spartak Moscow after the incidents that occurred months before in the second leg of the Europa League round of 32 played in San Mamés . The Bilbao club, under this sanction, had to pay a fine of 40,000 euros and suffer a partial closure of 2,000 seats in its stadium in the next European competition match to be played at home.
With the economic sanction it is not known, although it is intuited, what happened; but the second punishment, that of the partial closure of the stands, has expired.
That day, February 22, a member of the Ertzaintza (regional police) died during the police intervention prior to the match due to the confrontation between fans of both clubs. The charges against Athletic were of insufficient organization, throwing of flares and objects and public disturbances, similar to those of Spartak.
