After everything we have done for him, Celtic man ‘likely’ to leave in January despite penning five-year contract

Celtic left-back Alexandro Bernabei is ‘likely’ to leave in the January transfer window, The report claims the Hoops have ‘no interest’ in keeping hold of him this winter and plan to sign a new defender.

Bernabei, who is 24-years-old, is currently on loan at Internacional in Brazil. However, he is due to return to Celtic Park when his deal expires at the end of the year.

Celtic have a big decision to make on what to do with him next. His contract expires in June 2027 but he has fallen down the pecking order with the Scottish Premiership champions.

The Hoops landed the full-back back in June 2022 to bolster their defensive ranks. He has since made 28 appearances in all competitions, nine of which came in the last campaign, and he has chipped in with a single goal.

Prior to his move to Scotland, he rose up through the academy ranks at Lanus. He was a regular for them at various different youth levels before going on to play 88 times for their first-team, finding the net on five occasions.

His time at Celtic hasn’t gone to plan yet and he was given the green light to link up with Internacional back in South America to get some game time. He has since played 17 matches and has scored twice.

After joining his parent club a couple of years ago, the ex-Argentina youth international said: “I’m very happy to be here and I feel grateful to the club for giving me this opportunity. I feel proud to be playing in Europe because it was one of my dreams and I’m excited to train with and play with my new team-mates.

“The stadium is just incredible. The people, the club, team-mates, and the coaching staff are all incredible. I’m very excited and happy and I can’t wait to be playing in the Champions League. I’ve heard that the people are crazy, so I can’t wait to sense that feeling and emotion in Celtic Park.”

It was Ange Postecoglou who signed Bernabei for Celtic. The player was excited to work under the Australian and said: “I spoke to the manager and he said he believed in me and my quality and that I can adapt to the team quickly.

“This is my first time in Scotland and Glasgow and I’ve seen the city on the internet and it looks very beautiful, so I’m excited to be able to get to know it more. The objective is to become champion and we want to achieve big things as a club and I would like to achieve all of our objectives this year.”

Bernabei became the first player from Argentina to play for the Hoops. His future is up in the air now though and the club could look to cut their losses on him.
